GKC… The Man Who Was Not A Child Of His Age

May 18, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on GKC… The Man Who Was Not A Child Of His Age

By DONALD DeMARCO Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) was a child in many ways. He was a child of the universe, a child of nature, a child of wonder, and a child of God. But he was most certainly never a child of his age. An age is always narrow and one-sided. It has the infelicity of obstructing the timeless wonders of creation. “Every stone or flower is a hieroglyphic,” he wrote, “of which we have lost the key.” He was a man possessed with a vision that was enlarged by his faith. “The Catholic Church,” he remarked, “is the only thing that saves a man from the degrading slavery of being a child of his age.” One of Chesterton’s editors…Continue Reading

Restoring The Sacred… The Peace That Only Christ Can Give

May 16, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Restoring The Sacred… The Peace That Only Christ Can Give

By JAMES MONTI During these weeks of the Easter season, brightened even more this year by the centenary celebration of the first apparition of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13, the Church pauses to reflect at length upon the extraordinary events of Easter Sunday and the days that followed, while at the same time recalling the exciting early days of the Church as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles. Among the many details of precisely what took place on the first Easter Sunday we find our Lord’s very first words to the apostles upon entering the Upper Room: “Peace be with you” (John 20:19). This too was His greeting to the apostles when a week later He returned…Continue Reading

What Is America’s Goal In The World?

May 15, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on What Is America’s Goal In The World?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN For the World War II generation there was clarity. The attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, united the nation as it had never been before — in the conviction that Japan must be smashed, no matter how long it took or how many lives it cost. After the defeat of the Axis powers in 1945, however, Americans divided. Only with the Berlin Blockade of 1948, the fall of China to Mao and Russia’s explosion of an atom bomb in 1949, and North Korea’s invasion of the South in 1950, did we unite around the proposition that, for our own security, we had to go back to Europe and Asia. What was called the Cold War…Continue Reading

A Book Review . . . A Restricted Notion Of Reality

May 14, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on A Book Review . . . A Restricted Notion Of Reality

By JUDE P. DOUGHERTY Canales, Jimena. The Physicist and the Philosopher: Einstein, Bergson, and the Debate that Changed Our Understanding of Time. Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press, 2015. viii + 479 pp. Paper $24.95; cloth $35.00. A so-called debate took place between Henri Bergson and Albert Einstein in 1922 at the Société française de philosophie. It was a relatively brief encounter. The subject was Einstein’s theory of relativity and its implications. In a dramatic introduction to her topic, Jimena Canales exaggerates the professional standing of both men. Bergson is presented as an established philosopher, ranking with Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, and Kant, and as a public intellectual of consequence. Einstein’s theory of relativity is presented as a break with classical physics,…Continue Reading

Vatican Astronomer Says… Through Faith, See God In Creation

May 13, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Vatican Astronomer Says… Through Faith, See God In Creation

By SERGIO MORA VATICAN CITY (ZENIT) — “At the beginning of time, God spoke to us through Creation, says the Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians. Therefore, to study the universe with science, is an act of prayer, a way of encountering God.” To do so, however, “it is necessary to encounter God first as Father, as Abba, otherwise God cannot be encountered with science.” In other words, “faith must be there first, if one wishes to see God in Creation.” Talking with ZENIT, astronomer Guy Consolmagno explained this on the sidelines of the meeting held May 8 in the Holy See Press Office, where the Scientific Workshop on black holes, gravitational waves, and the peculiarity of space-time, held…Continue Reading

Today’s Ignored Martyrs

May 12, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Today’s Ignored Martyrs

By LAWRENCE P. GRAYSON ISIS is carrying out its vow to systematically kill and persecute Christians in countries of the Middle East and North Africa. On Palm Sunday, as Holy Week began, Islamic State suicide bombers in Egypt exploded their lethal weapons in two Coptic Christian churches, killing 47 people and injuring more than 100 others. Shortly before last Christmas, a suicide bomber killed 30 worshipers in St. Mark’s Cathedral in Cairo. On February 15, 2015, ISIS beheaded 21 Coptic Christians on a beach in Libya, and released a video of the group murder. Radical Islamic terrorist groups are employing barbaric tactics in a jihad, including mass slaughters, beheadings, kidnapping, rape, abductions of women and girls, compelled marriages, forced conversions, destruction…Continue Reading

Alec Guinness… The Force Was With Him

May 11, 2017 Featured Today Comments Off on Alec Guinness… The Force Was With Him

By DONALD DeMARCO Sir Alec Guinness (1914-2000), a convert to Catholicism, is best known to modern movie aficionados as Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Knight of the Jedi. Ironically, he almost turned down his memorable role in Star Wars. Commenting on the film’s benevolent power in the universe and the oft-repeated phrase — “May the force be with you” — Guinness said that as a Christian he does believe that something like the “force” exists, “But not as expressed in Star Wars.” That “force,” that is, the grace of God, was surely with Sir Alec throughout his lifetime and was filtered through to him in the form of many friends whom he regarded as “Blessings in Disguise” — also the title of…Continue Reading

ABUJA, Nigeria (CNA/EWTN News) — Another of the young women abducted from their school by Boko Haram militants have been freed, with more than 100 still missing. The Nigerian government announced the release of the girls, who were among the 300 abducted from the high school in Chibok in April 2014. The mass abduction by the militant Islamist group drew an international outcry that adopted the rally cry “Bring Back Our Girls,” focusing attention on the conflict with Boko Haram. The latest group of freed captives was released in exchange for as many as six suspected militants who were not identified, though some reports say the militants were high-ranking commanders in Boko Haram. There are also rumors of a large…Continue Reading
