Fantastic Reporting And Interpreting The Past

May 12, 2016 Featured Today Comments Off on Fantastic Reporting And Interpreting The Past

By JUDE DOUGHERTY I did not realize how addicted I was to euphemisms distinctly American until one of my books was being translated into German. The translator had a difficult time rendering into German some of my colloquial expressions. Readers of the American press are used to terms like “bandwagon,” “landslide,” “dead duck,” “breathing room,” and “strident,” particularly in an election year. Most readers will have some idea of what is meant by “Silicon Valley,” “Rust Belt,” and “ivory tower.” Yet many may be puzzled by headlines such as “Russia’s Agenda in Syria a Tight-Rope Act,” or reports of a “hybrid war that fits into Mr. Putin’s comfort zone.” Confronted with such reporting, informed readers will recognize at work the…Continue Reading

Culture Of Life 101 . . . “Dissenter Tactics”

By BRIAN CLOWES (Editor’s Note: Brian Clowes has been director of research and training at Human Life International since 1995. For an electronic copy of the book Call to Action or Call to Apostasy, consisting of a detailed description of the current forms of dissent and how to fight them, e-mail him at bclowes@hli.org.) + + + Part 1 So far, we have covered the first three steps of “POPE,” the most effective general strategy for opposing dissent in our dioceses and parishes — Prayer, Organizing, and Planning. The final step is to Expose their activities and Educate others about them. Take confidence in the fact that the dissenters cannot stand opposition and exposure. Lies only flourish when a shroud…Continue Reading

Arizona Republicans . . . See A Common Issue With Californians Suffering From Open-Borders Radicals

May 10, 2016 Featured Today Comments Off on Arizona Republicans . . . See A Common Issue With Californians Suffering From Open-Borders Radicals

By DEXTER DUGGAN MESA, Ariz. — Like the next-door neighbors they are, Arizona and California visit back and forth. Desert-region Arizonans may head west for southern California beaches in the summer, while Californians flee to the east for economic opportunities lacking under the not-so-Golden State’s Democratic Party dictatorship. Arizonans may know neighborhood streets in California towns as easily as their own backyards, and coastal Californians ogle three-bedroom Phoenix homes that cost less than three bank-account bonanzas. When two Islamic terrorists did their massacre last December in San Bernardino, that wasn’t just a name on a map to many in the Grand Canyon State, but a city they’d driven around east of Los Angeles. So, after open-borders radicals and rioters in…Continue Reading

Education Savings Accounts In Oklahoma

May 9, 2016 Featured Today Comments Off on Education Savings Accounts In Oklahoma

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK It is encouraging to see more and more state legislatures looking for ways to provide parents of parochial school students with some help in paying the tuition at the schools of their choice, especially when one keeps in mind that these parents pay taxes to support the public schools in their states. It indicates that the tide may be turning in our favor on this issue. To avoid the question of the separation of church and state, whatever form of relief that is given to these parents — whether it be vouchers, tax credits, or education savings accounts — must be set up to ensure that the money goes to them and not directly to a…Continue Reading

Fatima And The Year of Mercy

May 8, 2016 Featured Today Comments Off on Fatima And The Year of Mercy

By DONAL ANTHONY FOLEY We are now living through the Year of Mercy inaugurated by Pope Francis, which began on December 8, 2015, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, and will end on November 20, 2016, the feast of the Solemnity of Christ the King. So it could be said that liturgically the Year of Mercy leads us from our Lady to Christ, which is also what her apparitions at Fatima are meant to do, as is Marian devotion in general. And it is surely providential that the Pope decided that the Year of Mercy should immediately precede 2017, the centenary of the Fatima apparitions to the three young seers, Jacinta, Francisco, and Lucia, between May and October 1917. Pope…Continue Reading

Luther 1517-2017… Five Hundred Years Of Heresy And Doctrinal Confusion

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA, KM Part 8 (Editor’s Note: This is the eighth installment in a series by Wanderer contributor Raymond de Souza on Henry VIII’s book defending the seven sacraments against Martin Luther. De Souza edited this updated version of Henry’s work, which is presented to readers in this series. (This series will appear on a regular basis, as space allows.) + + + On The Sacrament Of The Altar: Introduction By Henry VIII I HAVE ALREADY given my view on these two chapters, namely, on abrogating indulgences and taking all authority away from the Pope. Although they are wicked, these two chapters are but the first flourishing or essays of Luther, who now begins to murder and destroy…Continue Reading

A Book Review . . . A Look Beyond Radical Secularism

May 6, 2016 Featured Today Comments Off on A Book Review . . . A Look Beyond Radical Secularism

By JUDE DOUGHERTY Manent, Pierre. Beyond Radical Secularism: How France and the Christian West Should Respond to the Islamic Challenge. Translated from the French by Ralph Hancock and Daniel J. Mahoney. South Bend, Ind.: St. Augustine’s Press, 2016. 115 pp. To say this is a timely book is almost an understatement. In its opening pages, Manent quotes Machiavelli to the effect that states may be slow to address important civic issues, but eventually some extrinsic accident such as war or revolution forces members of a nation to face a disruption to their common way of life. Manent is convinced that France has reached Machiavelli’s “deciding moment.” In fear or in hope, France, and we might say Europe, is now confronted…Continue Reading

Dishonoring General Jackson

May 4, 2016 Featured Today Comments Off on Dishonoring General Jackson

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN In Samuel Eliot Morison’s The Oxford History of the American People, there is a single sentence about Harriet Tubman. “An illiterate field hand, [Tubman] not only escaped herself but returned repeatedly and guided more than 300 slaves to freedom.” Morison, however, devotes most of five chapters to the greatest soldier-statesman in American history, save Washington, that pivotal figure between the Founding Fathers and the Civil War — Andrew Jackson. Slashed by a British officer in the Revolution, and a POW at 14, the orphaned Jackson went west, rose to head up the Tennessee militia, crushed an Indian uprising at Horseshoe Bend, Ala., in the War of 1812, then was ordered to New Orleans to defend the…Continue Reading

Euthanasia In Canada… Liberty Without Freedom

May 3, 2016 Featured Today Comments Off on Euthanasia In Canada… Liberty Without Freedom

By DONALD DeMARCO On April 14, 2016, Canada’s Liberal government introduced Bill C-14 legalizing euthanasia and assisted suicide. The long-awaited draft is intended to amend two Criminal Code sections that formerly prohibited euthanasia and assisted suicide. The Supreme Court of Canada, in a 9-0 decision on February of 2015, declared these sections to be unconstitutional. While there will be further discussion before the draft proposal becomes law, the Catholic Bishops of Canada have strongly denounced it, stating that “no matter how it will be amended” it remains a “danger to all vulnerable persons — particularly the aged, disabled, infirm and sick who so often find themselves isolated and marginalized.” Of special concern to the bishops is that the proposed federal…Continue Reading
