And A Child Shall Lead Them

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK College students are not children, yet the line from Isaiah 11:6, about how “a little child shall lead them,” may fit the role they will play is correcting the disorder at our Catholic universities. Perhaps it is wishful thinking, but one cannot help but wonder if the day will come when the students who attend Catholic colleges and universities will voice their opposition to the drift away from Catholicism at their schools. Prominent universities led by Catholic religious orders still use their admissions brochures to proclaim one version or another of their identity as “a Jesuit, Catholic university”; an “academic community of higher learning, animated from its origins by the Congregation of Holy Cross . .…Continue Reading

Restoring The Sacred . . . On Defending Doctrinal Truth Without Compromise

May 1, 2016 Featured Today Comments Off on Restoring The Sacred . . . On Defending Doctrinal Truth Without Compromise

By JAMES MONTI Several years ago I had the curious misfortune of having to listen to several homilies regarding St. John the Baptist in which this great Forerunner of the Christ was cast as somewhat of a villain. The homilist claimed that John was being too judgmental in condemning Herod for his adultery and incest, and thus senselessly brought about his own ruin at Herod’s hands. Moreover, according to this same homilist, the real reason that while in prison John sent several of his disciples to ask Christ whether or not He was the Messiah was that John, aflame with pharisaical, self-righteous indignation, was so scandalized by Christ welcoming sinners and violators of the law that he began to doubt…Continue Reading

If God Is Dead…

April 29, 2016 Featured Today Comments Off on If God Is Dead…

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN In a recent column Dennis Prager made an acute observation. “The vast majority of leading conservative writers . . . have a secular outlook on life. . . . They are unaware of the disaster that godlessness in the West has led to.” These secular conservatives may think that “America can survive the death of God and religion,” writes Prager, but they are wrong. And, indeed, the last half-century seems to bear him out. A people’s religion, their faith, creates their culture, and their culture creates their civilization. And when faith dies, the culture dies, the civilization dies, and the people begin to die. Is this not the recent history of the West? Today, no great…Continue Reading

Being Conscientious About Conscience

April 28, 2016 Featured Today Comments Off on Being Conscientious About Conscience

By DONALD DeMARCO My earliest recollection of an explanation of conscience was when I was a young lad sitting in a movie theater and being enthralled by Walt Disney’s 1940 classic, Pinocchio. The newly carved puppet had been brought to life by the Blue Fairy. But he was still a puppet and had not been endowed with a conscience. It fell to Jiminy Cricket to instruct Pinocchio on the meaning of conscience. “If you want to be a real boy,” Jiminy explained, “you have to know how to do the right thing because the world is full of temptations.” Therefore, you must “always let your conscience be your guide.” Then, the conscientious cricket launched into his explanation of conscience: “The…Continue Reading

The President, The Court, And Immigration

April 25, 2016 Featured Today Comments Off on The President, The Court, And Immigration

By JUDGE ANDREW P. NAPOLITANO In 2014, President Barack Obama signed 12 executive orders directing various agencies in the departments of State, Justice, and Homeland Security to refrain from deporting some 4 million adult immigrants illegally present in the United States if they are the parents of children born here or legally present here and if they hold a job, obtain a high-school diploma or its equivalent, pay taxes, and stay out of prison. Unfortunately for the president, the conditions he established for avoiding deportation had been rejected by Congress. In response to the executive orders, 26 states and the House of Representatives sued the president and the recipients of the orders, seeking to prevent them from being enforced. The…Continue Reading

Spring 1916… The First Apparition Of Angel Of Portugal

April 24, 2016 Featured Today Comments Off on Spring 1916… The First Apparition Of Angel Of Portugal

By DONAL ANTHONY FOLEY This year is the centenary of the three apparitions of the Angel of Portugal, or the Angel of Peace, to the three Fatima seers, Jacinta and Francisco Marto and Lucia dos Santos, in the spring, summer, and autumn of 1916. And just as the appearances of the angel prepared the children for their encounters with our Lady the following year, so we too can prepare for the Centenary of the Fatima apparitions next year by considering what the angel said to the children. This article will look at the first of these apparitions and explore its significance for us in 2016. We don’t have an exact date for this apparition, but Sr. Lucia remembers it as…Continue Reading

Is The GOP Risking Suicide?

April 23, 2016 Featured Today Comments Off on Is The GOP Risking Suicide?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Donald Trump has brought out the largest crowds in the history of primaries. He has won the most victories, the most delegates, the most votes. At this column is written, he is poised to sweep three of the five largest states in the nation — New York, Pennsylvania, and California. If he does, and the nomination is taken from him, the Republican Party will be seen by the American people as a glorified Chinese tong. The past week, Ted Cruz swept 34 delegates at the Colorado party convention. Attendees were not allowed to vote on whom they wanted as the party’s nominee. The following weekend, Cruz shut out Trump in Wyoming the same way. What does…Continue Reading
