Culture Of Life 101 . . . “Introduction To The Fight Over Homosexuality” (Continued)

May 14, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on Culture Of Life 101 . . . “Introduction To The Fight Over Homosexuality” (Continued)

By BRIAN CLOWES (Editor’s Note: Brian Clowes has been director of research and training at Human Life International since 1995.) + + + The previous article discussed the first two of ten reasons all Catholics should oppose the homosexual special rights agenda: It is both unhealthy and predatory in nature. The third reason we must oppose the special rights movement is because it is relentlessly coercive. Its members persistently lobby legislatures and clog courthouses demanding their own rights, but feel absolutely no regret as they relentlessly coerce and compel others to accept and even celebrate their lifestyle. Hundreds of “gay rights” and hate crimes laws have been enacted at all levels in the United States. Some “first world” governments are…Continue Reading

Up On His High Bench… Judge Snow Can’t See Border Chaos As He Hounds Arpaio

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — Four men were shot in the desert, two of them fatally, in drug-smuggling violence near Gila Bend, Ariz., on April 27, while two additional men ran away, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) reported from its Phoenix headquarters. Sun-baked little Gila Bend is about a 90-minute drive north of Mexico, which bristles with drug doings. Phoenix is about an additional hour northeast of Gila (pronounced HEE-la) Bend. This was part of a busy drug-smuggling week, the sheriff’s office said in an April 28 news release that provided the following information. Sheriff Joe Arpaio said he wasn’t surprised. “Violence and the drug business go hand-in-hand, and unless we intensify our efforts to stop the traffic coming…Continue Reading

A Globalist Mirage… Jeb Bush’s Fountain Of Youth For U.S. Economy

May 12, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on A Globalist Mirage… Jeb Bush’s Fountain Of Youth For U.S. Economy

By DEXTER DUGGAN Rather reminiscent of Spanish explorers long ago seeking a fabled Fountain of Youth in Florida, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said his expansive immigration policies would deliver youth and dynamism to energize the United States’ economy. For Bush, the already generous legal immigration policies here aren’t enough to refresh the U.S. When Bush spoke on April 30 at a forum put on by National Review magazine, he didn’t say this youth and dynamism currently are in suspended animation off on another planet, waiting for a scientist somehow to awaken them and fly them here. Instead, they’re already throbbing away south of the U.S. border, just waiting for permission to cross the line. Wait a minute. If a…Continue Reading

A Crisis In The German Church?. . . Synod Questionnaire Would Suggest So

May 11, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on A Crisis In The German Church?. . . Synod Questionnaire Would Suggest So

By CARL BUNDERSON VATICAN CITY (CNA) — The Synod of Bishops began receiving in April responses to a questionnaire that had been sent to dioceses the world over in preparation for October’s Synod on the Family. The results from Germany indicate that most Catholics there hope for an openness to divorce and remarriage, as well as to homosexual acts. The synthesis of responses from Catholics in Germany was released by their bishops’ conference on April 16. The 17-page document, provided in an English translation, summarizes the responses, which filled some 1,000 pages. According to the German Bishops’ Conference, the largest part of comments dealt with the issues of the divorced and civilly remarried, cohabiting couples, and same-sex unions. The consultation…Continue Reading

A Movie Review . . . “Hope Grows” In This New Film

May 10, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on A Movie Review . . . “Hope Grows” In This New Film

By REY FLORES We’ve all heard the expression about life throwing us a few curve balls and our resolve to try and overcome them, but sometimes those curve balls get the best of us and we strike out. Just because we may strike out here and there doesn’t mean that the game is over. That is the case with the terrific new film Where Hope Grows, where we meet Calvin Campbell, a former professional baseball player sent to an early retirement due to his panic attacks at the plate. Campbell falls into a lifestyle of late nights, excessive drinking, and wallowing in self-pity to the point where he’s on the verge of losing his teenage daughter. His life is in…Continue Reading

Not A Laughing Matter

May 9, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on Not A Laughing Matter

By DONALD DeMARCO Laughter lifts the spirit. This is why humor is called levity. When we laugh we come closest to levitation. We are, after all, light-hearted beings. Because we can laugh at our troubles means that we can transcend them. Laughter, then, as good medicine, brightens our days and lengthens our lives. Sam Levenson, as his name might suggest, was an accomplished humorist. He spent the better part of his life collecting jokes and witticisms from every legitimate source available. He passed away in 1980 and may have been one of the last “clean” humorists to have had a prominent place in the media. In his 1979 book, You Don’t Have to Be in Who’s Who to Know What’s…Continue Reading

The GOP Congress . . . Will It Stop D.C.’s Attack On Catholic Schools And Freedom Of Conscience?

May 7, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on The GOP Congress . . . Will It Stop D.C.’s Attack On Catholic Schools And Freedom Of Conscience?

By TERENCE P. JEFFREY (Editor’s Note: Terence P. Jeffrey is the editor-in-chief of CNSnews.com. Creators Syndicate provided this column. All rights reserved.) + + + The District of Columbia Council and Mayor Muriel Bowser have launched a two-front war against the First Amendment rights of Catholic schools and other religious and pro-life institutions in Washington, D.C. The question now: Will House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell use the authority the Constitution gives Congress over D.C. and expenditures from the Treasury to protect religious liberty in the nation’s capital itself? This is a defining issue for this Congress. In January, Bowser signed two pieces of D.C. legislation — the Reproductive Health Non-Discrimination Amendment Act and the Human…Continue Reading

By BRIAN CLOWES (Editor’s Note: Brian Clowes has been director of research and training at Human Life International since 1995.) + + + “Evil may have its day, but to God go the weeks and the years. It must ever be so” — Fr. Eugene Fahy, SJ. + + + So far, the Culture of Life series has covered abortion and birth control. The original plan was to move on to artificial reproductive technologies, euthanasia, and eugenics. In light of recent and impending events involving the United States Supreme Court and the battles over various state Religious Freedom Restoration Acts, it seems wise instead to equip Catholics to rationally discuss the “gay rights” issue earlier than originally intended. After…Continue Reading

Betrayed By Culture

May 5, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on Betrayed By Culture

By DONALD DeMARCO I was reading, with genuine sadness, about a Jesuit priest who visits a Catholic home for unwed mothers three times a year to give weekend retreats. He describes the tragedies in the lives of these young girls as “appalling.” The age of these young mothers ranges from 13 upwards, with the median age being around 16 or 17. The role of the priest is heroic, while the plight of the single moms is something that was largely avoidable. An old Dutch maxim comes to mind: “We are too soon old and too late smart.” The Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard noted: “We live forward, but we understand backwards.” We can repent of our mistakes, but we cannot relive…Continue Reading
