Best Of Times Or Worst Of Times?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Last week, John Kerry seemed to be auditioning for the role of Dr. Pangloss. Despite jihadi violence across the Middle East and ISIS terror in Iraq and Syria, Kerry told Congress, we live in “a period of less daily threat to Americans and to people in the world than normally — less deaths, less violent deaths today than through the last century.” Director of National Intelligence James Clapper appeared to undercut Kerry the next day when he testified, “When the final accounting is done, 2014 will have been the most lethal year for global terrorism in the 45 years [since] such data has been compiled.” From January through September 2014, said Clapper, there were 13,000 terrorist…Continue Reading

The Good Pagan’s Failure

March 4, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on The Good Pagan’s Failure

By JUDE P. DOUGHERTY As Europe faces what seems to be a cultural crisis, a book written in 1939 comes to mind for its present relevance. It is Rosalind Murray’s The Good Pagan’s Failure. (1) Murray was the daughter of the Australian-born, British classical scholar Gilbert Murray, and the wife for 30 years of Arnold Toynbee, British historian and philosopher of history, best known for his 12-volume Study of History. She was remarkably positioned to know and to assess the mind of what she calls the “Enlightened Pagan.” The book is essentially a critique of the fashionable humanism and liberalism of her day, the epoch of George Bernard Shaw, Bertrand Russell, and G.E. Moore. It is Rosalind Murray’s contention that…Continue Reading

Culture Of Life 101… “Birth Control For Teens Who Are ‘Doing It Anyway’?”

March 3, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on Culture Of Life 101… “Birth Control For Teens Who Are ‘Doing It Anyway’?”

By BRIAN CLOWES (Editor’s Note: Brian Clowes has been director of research and training at Human Life International since 1995. For an electronic copy of chapter 21 of The Facts of Life, “Contraception,” e-mail him at bclowes@hli.org.) + + + If pressed, many “family planners” admit that, in an ideal world, all young people would refrain from sexual activity before marriage and remain faithful to their spouses after. Such a society would have no HIV-AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases, very little unwanted pregnancy (and few pregnancies among unmarried teens!), and most likely a very low divorce rate. In turn, crime, poverty, and dropping out of school would plunge. But immediately after acknowledging this unavoidable truth, the advocates of birth…Continue Reading

Virginia Parish Calls On Catholics . . . Join In An “Affirmation Of Faith” To Pope Francis

March 2, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on Virginia Parish Calls On Catholics . . . Join In An “Affirmation Of Faith” To Pope Francis

By LISA BOURNE FRONT ROYAL, Va. (LifeSiteNews) — A Virginia Catholic parish is publicly affirming Church teaching on marriage and its fidelity to the Church, while at the same time calling on Pope Francis to proclaim and defend the same. In the wake of the October Extraordinary Synod on the Family in Rome, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Front Royal, Va., produced an Affirmation of Faith Concerning Marriage and the Family, and published it in their Sunday bulletin on December 14. Now the parish is urging other parishes and Catholic individuals to join them. “There have been other times in Church history where the faithful have recalled the clergy to the fullness of the truths of the faith,…Continue Reading

Egalitarian Chess

March 1, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on Egalitarian Chess

By DONALD DeMARCO A high school principal, let us imagine, who is thoroughly devoted to political correctness, summoned the school’s chess coach into his office. In that venue the following conversation took place. P: I think it is time to bring the game of chess into the 21st century. C: But chess is a timeless game. It goes back to the sixth century. What are you talking about? P: Chess no longer fits into modern-day standards. The king represents patriarchy and male dominance. The queen perpetuates a female stereotype. The bishops stand for clericalism, while the knights and castles are simply medieval. We want chess to be egalitarian as well as up-to-date, a game in which each piece starts out…Continue Reading

What If The Government Fears Freedom?

February 28, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on What If The Government Fears Freedom?

By ANDREW P. NAPOLITANO What if the current massive spying on Americans began with an innocent secret executive order signed by President Reagan in 1986? What if Reagan contemplated that he was only authorizing American spies to spy on foreign spies unlawfully present in the U.S.? What if Reagan knew and respected the history of the Fourth Amendment? What if the essence of that history is the colonial revulsion at the British use of general warrants? What if general warrants were issued by a secret court in London and authorized British agents in America to search wherever they wished and to seize whatever they found? What if the revulsion at this British government practice was so overwhelming that it led…Continue Reading

Our Lady And The New Evangelization

February 27, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on Our Lady And The New Evangelization

By DONAL ANTHONY FOLEY Part 3 This article will look at the importance of the modern Marian apparitions, and particularly Fatima, and in this regard, this is what the Church, in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (n. 67) says about private revelation: “Throughout the ages, there have been so-called ‘private’ revelations, some of which have been recognized by the authority of the Church. They do not belong, however, to the deposit of faith. It is not their role to improve or complete Christ’s definitive Revelation, but to help live more fully by it in a certain period of history. Guided by the Magisterium of the Church, the sensus fidelium knows how to discern and welcome in these revelations whatever…Continue Reading

Hanging Rudy Out To Dry

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN Back in 1987, this writer was invited by friends to advise them on a press conference they had called to oppose President Reagan’s signing of an INF treaty to remove all nuclear missiles from Europe. My advice: Deplore the treaty; do not attack the president. The next day, Howard Phillips declared that Ronald Reagan had become a “useful idiot for Soviet propaganda.” Howie captured the headlines, as did Rudy Giuliani after that dinner at 21 Club for Gov. Scott Walker, where the mayor spontaneously rose to declaim, “I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I do not believe that the president loves America….He wasn’t brought up the way you were brought up and…Continue Reading

Darfur: Hell Without The Cameras

February 25, 2015 Featured Today Comments Off on Darfur: Hell Without The Cameras

By JOHN J. METZLER UNITED NATIONS — In recent years, there has been a dearth of media coverage of Darfur’s humanitarian crisis. What had once been a focus for both diplomatic and high-profile celebrity efforts to detail human rights abuses during more than a decade of inter-ethnic conflict in Sudan’s troubled western region, has now been bypassed by both crisis fatigue and a host of other larger African regional conflicts. Even in 2014, the situation was grim. Over 3,000 villages were burned. Now there may be some long overdue refocus, with a chilling new report of mass rape and systematic abuses of Darfur villagers in a series of sordid incidents carried out by the Sudanese army. In late October 2014,…Continue Reading

Culture Of Life 101 . . . “Should Serodiscordant Couples Be Permitted To Use Condoms?”

By BRIAN CLOWES (Editor’s Note: Brian Clowes has been director of research and training at Human Life International since 1995. For an electronic copy of the book The Case Against Condoms, e-mail him at bclowes@hli.org.) + + + There are times when priests, ministers, and pro-life activists encounter what might be called the “ultimate hard case” involving condoms. This is the situation in which a husband and wife are serodiscordant: One is HIV positive and the other is not. The question inevitably arises as to whether or not they may use condoms to prevent HIV transmission to the uninfected spouse in this very special case. Before we consider this question, we should remember that all Culture of Death activists use…Continue Reading
