Will Russiagate Backfire On The Left?

March 24, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Will Russiagate Backfire On The Left?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN The big losers of the Russian hacking scandal may yet be those who invested all their capital in a script that turned out to be based on a fairy tale. In the March 20 Intelligence Committee hearings, James Comey did confirm that his FBI has found nothing to support President Trump’s tweet that President Obama ordered him wiretapped. Not unexpected, but undeniably an embarrassment for the tweeter-in-chief. Yet longer-term damage may have been done to the left. For that hearing showed that its rendering of the campaign of 2016 may be a product of fiction and a fevered imagination. After eight months investigating the hacking and leaking of the emails of Clinton campaign chief John Podesta…Continue Reading

Cynicism And Skepticism

March 23, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Cynicism And Skepticism

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK It is a dilemma that classroom teachers struggle with: How do we promote a healthy skepticism among our students, without encouraging cynicism, when discussing the great issues of the past or current events? We want our students to learn to see through false claims and propaganda, to spot humbug. On the other hand, we do not want for them to assume that everyone is a phony with base motives. There is, for example, a difference between the argument in favor of United States’ military and economic intervention in Eastern Europe after World War II and that of the Soviet Union. That said, it cannot be denied that there is a tendency of political leaders and partisans…Continue Reading

Lutherlust

Flashback 1967 Editor’s Note. This was published in The Wanderer November 9, 1967 By Jerome Docherty, O.S.B Being a senior citizen I am an Oldster, and therefore just 60 years out of date to the Youngsters. And as for the Council of Trent, well that is just 400 years out of date! It is very strange therefore to me, an Oldster, to see the Youngsters resurrecting Luther who died just 430 years ago! If their only fault were inconsistency one could be tolerant. But their main fault is very grave. Their efforts to re-evaluate and rehabilitate Luther constitute a severe judgment and condemnation of all the Popes who dealt with Luther or managed the Council of Trent, of that same…Continue Reading

Did Obama Spy On Trump?

March 21, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Did Obama Spy On Trump?

By JUDGE ANDREW P. NAPOLITANO The question of whether former President Barack Obama actually spied on President Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign and transition has been tantalizing Washington since President Trump first made the allegation several weeks ago. Since then, three investigations have been launched — one by the FBI, one by the House of Representatives, and one by the Senate. Are the investigators chasing a phantom, or did this actually happen? Here is the back story. Obama would not have needed a warrant to authorize surveillance on Trump. Obama was the president and as such enjoyed authority under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to order surveillance on any person in America, without suspicion, probable cause or a…Continue Reading

Rape, Abortion, And Domestic Violence

March 21, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Rape, Abortion, And Domestic Violence

By REY FLORES Years ago when I worked as a volunteer coordinator at a domestic violence shelter, I was still young and more liberal in my views than I am now. It was a demanding job where I witnessed a lot of pain, suffering, and heartache. Thankfully I also saw women and children survive and move on to a better life in a few cases. Some of the outreach and networking we did was with rape victim advocate organizations. We would sometimes work with the same women and families who had sadly also experienced some form of sexual assault. The one thing that bothers me to this day is how the domestic violence and rape victim advocates and the organizations…Continue Reading

An Apology (Of Sorts) To Liberal Catholics

March 20, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on An Apology (Of Sorts) To Liberal Catholics

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK I have some friends and family members who supported Bill Clinton, even after the Monica Lewinsky scandal became public knowledge. I would imagine that many conservative Catholics are in the same boat, considering the longstanding links between urban Catholics and the trade unions and the Democrats’ image as the party of “the little guy.” I never “scolded” the people I knew for their vote, limiting my remarks to explanations for why I opposed Clinton. But I must admit that, in my private thoughts, I was disappointed in their willingness to vote for a man who had behaved so shamefully in sexual matters. I couldn’t believe it when I heard them repeat one version or another of…Continue Reading

Who’s In Charge Here?. . . How To Go Forward With GOP’s Golden Health-Care Opportunity?

March 19, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Who’s In Charge Here?. . . How To Go Forward With GOP’s Golden Health-Care Opportunity?

By DEXTER DUGGAN The Americans who definitely need a heap of health care today would be those Republican politicians covered with bumps, bruises, black eyes, and lacerations inflicted during their Capitol Hill battle among themselves over how to repeal Obamacare. President Trump’s political health also is seriously at stake. How did a successful multibillionaire business executive allow such enervating infighting on this signature issue to develop rapidly under his leadership? Almost as soon as the legislation was revealed publicly on March 6, it was criticized in important quarters within the president’s own party, and among conservative-activist groups, as woefully inadequate. Word already had circulated that big disappointments were on the way. On March 2, CBS News showed Sen. Rand Paul…Continue Reading

Dutch Show Anti-Islamic Fear

March 18, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Dutch Show Anti-Islamic Fear

By JOHN BURKE (Editor’s Note: John Burke is a British journalist who speaks Dutch, and visits the Netherlands frequently. + + + The slogan Allahu Akbar has been sprayed on the outside of the Catholic church in Ede whose priest serves five parishes in the central Netherlands. Both facts explain the surge short of success by the Party for Freedom (PVV) in the Dutch general election on May 15 which saw it gain five seats but still four short of the 24 it had in 2010. The party was founded only in 2006 to combat Muslim immigration and oppose the European Union, but the PVV’s attitude toward abortion, euthanasia, and homosexuality is confused. Its leader, Geert Wilders, is a baptized…Continue Reading

Is A Korean Missile Crisis Ahead?

March 17, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Is A Korean Missile Crisis Ahead?

By PATRICK J. BUCHANAN To back up Defense Secretary “Mad Dog” Mattis’ warning last month, that the U.S. “remains steadfast in its commitment” to its allies, President Donald Trump is sending B-1 and B-52 bombers to Korea. Some 300,000 South Korean and 15,000 U.S. troops have begun their annual Foal Eagle joint war exercises that run through April. “The two sides are like two accelerating trains coming toward each other with neither side willing to give way,” says Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, “Are (they) really ready for a head-on collision?” So it would seem. It is Kim Jong Un, 33-year-old grandson of that Stalinist state’s founding father, who launched the first Korean War, who brought on this confrontation. In…Continue Reading

Kutztown University… Scrubs Chalked Pro-Life Messages From Sidewalks

March 16, 2017 Frontpage Comments Off on Kutztown University… Scrubs Chalked Pro-Life Messages From Sidewalks

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Alliance Defending Freedom sent a letter March 13 to the president of Kutztown University of Pennsylvania after officials there scrubbed chalked pro-life messages from the campus’ sidewalks even though the school permits other groups to chalk. Members of the Students for Life chapter at the university wrote life-affirming messages onto various sidewalks and other uncovered walkways on campus as part of National Pro-Life Chalk Day, but later learned that university officials used a scrub brush to wash the messages away, saying they were “just following orders.” When students replaced the messages, officials scrubbed some of them away again. “University officials can’t chalk up their censorship to ‘following orders’ to enforce an unconstitutional campus policy,” said ADF Legal…Continue Reading
