The Emerging Pro-Life Challenge

April 14, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on The Emerging Pro-Life Challenge

By LAWRENCE P. GRAYSON There is a feeling of hope among pro-life advocates that after 41 years of battling legalized abortion, their efforts are bearing results. The Guttmacher Institute recently reported that the number of abortions in the United States decreased from 1.21 million in 2008 to 1.06 million in 2011, a dramatic 13 percent decline, while the number of abortions per 1,000 women fell to 16.9, a historic low. In addition, 87 abortion clinics closed or stopped offering surgical abortions in 2013, reducing the total number of such facilities in the United States to 582, which is 73 percent below a high of 2,176 clinics in 1991. A number of pro-life organizations think that abortion is a failing business.

“Self-Identifying” Catholics

By REY FLORES “Lord, please break the laws of the universe for my convenience, Amen” — Emo Philips. That quotation from comedian Emo Philips from the 1985 Cinemax Comedy Experiment broadcast just about sums it up for many in the modern-day Catholic Church. In that same monologue, Philips told another joke about how when he was a little boy, he used to pray to God for a new bicycle, but then he realized that the Lord did not operate that way. So Philips instead stole a bicycle and asked for forgiveness. Nevertheless, he got his bicycle.

Arizona Border Fence . . . Speaks Volumes About Violations That Cardinal Overlooks

April 12, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Arizona Border Fence . . . Speaks Volumes About Violations That Cardinal Overlooks

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — There wasn’t too much to disagree with in the words of the homily that Boston’s Sean Cardinal O’Malley, OFM Cap., delivered April 1 during a Mass at the high border fence in Nogales, Ariz. But what remained unsaid? Many people are suffering and deserve Christian compassion, he said, giving examples of people seeking better lives. The cardinal did condemn some people harshly twice in his prepared remarks, though. Drawing his displeasure were “the xenophobic ranting of a segment of the population” and “the bigotry and xenophobia of the Know-Nothings.” He wasn’t referring to illegal aliens.

The United Nations As False Religion

April 11, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on The United Nations As False Religion

By DONALD DeMARCO The 1945 Charter of the United Nations proclaimed its intention “to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war . . . to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person . . . to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom . . . to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbors.” All these aims are most commendable and one could put forward a strong case that they are consistent with the aims of the Catholic Church. The fact that it is only too clear that the UN and the Church do not see eye-to-eye on many other important…Continue Reading

As Abortion Movement Dodders . . . Fifth Circuit Upholds Texas Requirements

April 10, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on As Abortion Movement Dodders . . . Fifth Circuit Upholds Texas Requirements

By DEXTER DUGGAN The aging of the pro-abortion revolution was noted in passing in the unanimous ruling by the Fifth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals that upheld two challenged provisions of the Texas abortion law passed last year. An owner of the Whole Woman’s Health clinics “testified that 11 of the 14 physicians at her clinics are over the age of 60, and six are over the age of 70,” the opinion by Judge Edith Jones noted. The misplaced bright hopes of pro-abortionists from the 1970s have declined into decrepitude as their revolution has been exposed as a dismal failure and betrayal of women. Legions of eager new abortionists just aren’t materializing. The Fifth Circuit’s 3-0 ruling on…Continue Reading

Turning Up The Heat On De Blasio

April 9, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Turning Up The Heat On De Blasio

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK It is not yet clear whether New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio will get away with his campaign to close down the city’s charter schools. What is clear is that he will not do it easily. He is in a fight. Commentators of all political persuasions are turning up the heat. What de Blasio is doing is being seen by more and more New Yorkers as an affront to fairness, decency, and common sense. He is closing down schools that help the city’s minority children, forcing them into failing neighborhood public schools. Thomas Sowell, as one would expect, is in the vanguard against de Blasio. He asked in a recent column: “Why would anybody who…Continue Reading

Operation Rice Bowl . . . Helping Or Hurting The Poor?

April 8, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Operation Rice Bowl . . . Helping Or Hurting The Poor?

By REY FLORES At one time or another, we have been asked to help the poor, whether it was through the Church or being asked directly by a beggar. Once I approached a woman and her children at the corner of State and Lake Streets in downtown Chicago as mom was rummaging through a trash can looking for something to eat for her children. I gave her the last 20 dollars I had and prayed for them. Another time recently at Santa Monica pier in Los Angeles, I saw a man also digging through a trash can looking for anything he could eat. I had just gotten my cheeseburger and fries from the Pier Burger when I saw him and…Continue Reading

“Galt.io” Hopes . . . To Give Conservatives A Powerful New Online Presence

April 7, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on “Galt.io” Hopes . . . To Give Conservatives A Powerful New Online Presence

By DEXTER DUGGAN Twin Cities-based radio talk host Jason Lewis hopes he’ll have the answer for conservatives and libertarians looking for a one-stop location online where they can organize for and promote their causes, Galt.io. “The beauty of it is, if they don’t find a cause they like, they can start their own,” Lewis told The Wanderer in a telephone interview about the social organizing platform. Lewis, who’s heard in Minnesota’s Twin Cities on KTLK (1130 AM), said he has 60 radio affiliates, from Oregon to Florida.

Women Priests…Why Not?… Understanding The Catholic Priesthood

April 6, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Women Priests…Why Not?… Understanding The Catholic Priesthood

By RAYMOND DE SOUZA, KM Part 3 Here in the United States, there was a time when slavery was legal. Slaves did not have the right to vote and to be voted into public office. With the end of slavery, in due course the ex-slaves were recognized as citizens and entitled to vote and be voted into public office. In the Catholic Church, women are not entitled to be ordained to the priesthood. Is this parallel correct? If this situation ever comes to an end, will they be entitled to be priests, bishops, and even. . . ? Here is the question: Is the Christian priesthood a human right, like voting in a republic, or is it a privilege, given…Continue Reading

Finnish Scholar In Rome . . . A Non-Catholic Sets The Catholic Record Straight

By ALBERTO CAROSA ROME — Villa Lante al Gianicolo, located on one of the many picturesque hills of Rome with a unique view of the eternal city, is probably one of the best-preserved Renaissance villas in the city and is the property of Finland. This stately mansion houses the Institutum Romanum Finlandiae, Finland’s cultural institute, and the Finnish Embassy to the Holy See. One of the main purposes of a cultural institute is obviously to arrange cultural events, such as the conference, “Pilgrims or Benefice Hunters? Ordination of Finnish Clergy in the Fifteenth Century Roman Curia.” It was held there February 19, under the auspices of the institute’s current director, Tuomas Heikkilä, a professor of history attached to the University…Continue Reading
