The Emerging Pro-Life Challenge

By LAWRENCE P. GRAYSON There is a feeling of hope among pro-life advocates that after 41 years of battling legalized abortion, their efforts are bearing results. The Guttmacher Institute recently reported that the number of abortions in the United States decreased from 1.21 million in 2008 to 1.06 million in 2011, a dramatic 13 percent decline, while the number of abortions per 1,000 women fell to 16.9, a historic low. In addition, 87 abortion clinics closed or stopped offering surgical abortions in 2013, reducing the total number of such facilities in the United States to 582, which is 73 percent below a high of 2,176 clinics in 1991. A number of pro-life organizations think that abortion is a failing business.

That quotation from comedian Emo Philips from the 1985 Cinemax Comedy Experiment broadcast just about sums it up for many in the modern-day Catholic Church. In that same monologue, Philips told another joke about how when he was a little boy, he used to pray to God for a new bicycle, but then he realized that the Lord did not operate that way. So Philips instead stole a bicycle and asked for forgiveness. Nevertheless, he got his bicycle.

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — There wasn’t too much to disagree with in the words of the homily that Boston’s Sean Cardinal O’Malley, OFM Cap., delivered April 1 during a Mass at the high border fence in Nogales, Ariz. But what remained unsaid? Many people are suffering and deserve Christian compassion, he said, giving examples of people seeking better lives. The cardinal did condemn some people harshly twice in his prepared remarks, though. Drawing his displeasure were “the xenophobic ranting of a segment of the population” and “the bigotry and xenophobia of the Know-Nothings.” He wasn’t referring to illegal aliens.

By DEXTER DUGGAN The aging of the pro-abortion revolution was noted in passing in the unanimous ruling by the Fifth Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals that upheld two challenged provisions of the Texas abortion law passed last year. An owner of the Whole Woman’s Health clinics “testified that 11 of the 14 physicians at her clinics are over the age of 60, and six are over the age of 70,” the opinion by Judge Edith Jones noted. The misplaced bright hopes of pro-abortionists from the 1970s have declined into decrepitude as their revolution has been exposed as a dismal failure and betrayal of women.
