The Frog In The Pot

May 2, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on The Frog In The Pot

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Mark Twain’s story about how a frog will leap to save its life if dropped suddenly into a pot of boiling water, but sit and permit itself to be boiled to death if the heat is turned up gradually, is cited often by commentators. That is because it makes an important point: People will tolerate changes that they would find intolerable on first hearing if the changes are introduced gradually enough. Think about how our forebears would have reacted when the idea of a federal income tax was first put on the table in the early years of the 20th century — if they were told about the income taxes we are paying these days. Or…Continue Reading

Why Not Slavery? And Other Matters

May 1, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Why Not Slavery? And Other Matters

By GEORGE A. KENDALL Regarding the Pelletier case (see Stephen Krason, “The Justina Pelletier Case and the Abusive Child Protective System,” The Wanderer, April 17, 2014, p. 8B), some are arguing that there must be more to the case than we are hearing, that the authorities in Massachusetts must have information that they are not sharing with us, which, if made public, would justify the apparent atrocity they are committing against Justina and her family.     But if that is the case, it is incumbent on them to make this information public — immediately. As long as they do not, it is legitimate for us to ask: What are they hiding? It reminds me of the way both Presidents Johnson…Continue Reading

Burning Babies’ Bodies For Energy . . . How Did Societies Slip So Far Into The Flames?

May 1, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Burning Babies’ Bodies For Energy . . . How Did Societies Slip So Far Into The Flames?

By DEXTER DUGGAN Society has become a burning building whose basement is bottomless. Trapped people keep sinking deeper as the flames rage all around. It’s a descent into hell without end. It’s Dante’s Inferno. But while the force of Satan is felt everywhere, you still don’t see him because the path only continues descending toward his lair. Why won’t it ever end? How did it get started? Abortion on demand was legalized one way or another as a step forward. The back-alley abortion mills moved forth onto Main Street as legal “pro-choice” mills. Abortion becomes another type of birth control. Women start being maimed by the legal abortions. The descent doesn’t stop. Babies who manage to survive abortion are killed.…Continue Reading

Hypocrisy At Mozilla

April 30, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Hypocrisy At Mozilla

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK There are times when it is worth listening to the left-wing members of the panels on the talk shows. And not just because it helps us to know what the other side is thinking. It can also shake us out of our comfort zone by forcing us to deal with a line of reasoning we might not have considered otherwise. Left-wingers are many things, but it a mistake to assume them stupid or not well read. A recent example was a discussion of the campaign to force the resignation of Brendan Eich, the CEO of the web browser company Mozilla, by a group of employees angered by his $1,000 contribution in 2008 to support Proposition 8…Continue Reading

The Canonization Of John Paul ll And John XXIII And “Traditionalist” Pusillanimity

April 28, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on The Canonization Of John Paul ll And John XXIII And “Traditionalist” Pusillanimity

By JOHN M. DEJAK On this Quasimodo (Dominica in albis, Low, and Divine Mercy) Sunday, I am shocked at the pusillanimity of some of the so-called traditionalists in the Church. A great gift has been given to the whole of the Church with Saints John XXIII and John Paul II and yet, some traditionalists foment an attitude of ”hunkering down” and the “enduring” the authentic joy of the Church on this day. Likewise, other traditionalist types ask why Blessed Pius IX or Ven. Pius XII has not been canonized. It is one thing to ask questions such as the latter which are legitimate; it is also legitimate to question whether politics or political correctness play a role in the canonization process,…Continue Reading

An Open Letter To Fr. Michael Pfleger

April 28, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on An Open Letter To Fr. Michael Pfleger

By REY FLORES Dear Fr. Pfleger, you may or may not remember me, but either way, I am reaching out to you once more. If you do recall, I attended the end of the school year anti-violence rally at St. Sabina’s in June of 2012 which you had invited me to. I was the guy with the huge sandwich board sign from the American Life League that said “All Life is Precious”; we even took a picture together and you gave me a nifty t-shirt commemorating the event. On that warm June night in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood, I marched alongside you and Chicago Chief of Police Garry McCarthy. There were many people there; I’d estimate about one thousand to twelve…Continue Reading

California Radio Commentator . . . Lauds St. John XXIII’s Loving Relationship With Jews

April 27, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on California Radio Commentator . . . Lauds St. John XXIII’s Loving Relationship With Jews

By DEXTER DUGGAN Although newly declared St. John XXIII had only one miracle rather than the customary two attributed to him as the case for his canonization was compiled, there was a second miracle by this Pope who called for the Second Vatican Council to convene, a San Francisco author and radio personality contends. “That miracle was his decision to completely reframe the relationship between Catholics and Jews,” John Rothmann writes in the April issue of Robert Moynihan’s Inside the Vatican magazine (insidethevatican.com). The article is titled, “An Incomparable Pope – John XXIII and the Jews.” See insidethevatican.com/john-xxiii/incomparable-pope-john-xxiii-jews-long.

Another Molokai Saint? Diocese Of Honolulu Investigates Brother Dutton’s Life

April 26, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Another Molokai Saint? Diocese Of Honolulu Investigates Brother Dutton’s Life

By PEGGY MOEN   “I wish to guard you against having too high an estimate of the work here. Work performed with a good intention to accomplish the Will of the Almighty God, for His glory, is the same in one place as another. One’s Molokai can be anywhere” — Brother Joseph Dutton. +    +    +   “He wore a blue-denim shirt, which fitted his well-knit, slim, lithe, muscular figure. He stood about five feet seven inches tall; had dark brown hair and grayish blue eyes; a low voice, placid features, and a pleasant smile. He was reserved and thoughtful, had nothing to say about the reason for seeking seclusion and work at Molokai, and turning his back on the…Continue Reading

The Left And The Right Flip

April 25, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on The Left And The Right Flip

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK We do not want to promote an unhealthy cynicism among our children. But neither do we want them to be gullible. We have been given an example in recent weeks of how — often enough to matter — when people argue “on principle,” they are doing no such thing; that they want what they want and will choose the principle that helps them achieve that end. We take it for granted that some people argue a case that way: lawyers, for example. We expect their primary objective to be winning the case for their client. If that takes using a literal reading of the law to exclude some evidence as inadmissible we expect them to do…Continue Reading
