Our “Evolving” Thought

February 25, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Our “Evolving” Thought

By DEACON JAMES H. TONER (Editor’s Note: Deacon James H. Toner, whose most recent book is Worthy of the Promises, serves at Our Lady of Grace Church in Greensboro, N.C. Another version of this article appeared in his diocesan newspaper.) +    +    + “That a good many Christians today kneel before the world is a fact perfectly clear” — Jacques Maritain (1882-1973), The Peasant of the Garonne. +    +    + A number of prominent politicians have recently suggested that their thought has been “evolving” on various moral subjects. Inevitably some will ask why the Church’s doctrine (cf. Titus 2:1) isn’t, they think, similarly evolving. They tell us to prize novelty above everything else. The only thing we can be sure…Continue Reading

British Pro-Life Leader . . . Says World’s Bishops Must Deny Eucharist To Defiant

February 24, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on British Pro-Life Leader . . . Says World’s Bishops Must Deny Eucharist To Defiant

By DEXTER DUGGAN A veteran British pro-life leader, John Smeaton, received standing ovations at three recent major gatherings when he called attention to “the scandal of committed pro-abortion politicians receiving the Holy Eucharist,” he told The Wanderer. Accepting an award in early February at one of the gatherings, Smeaton called on Catholic bishops worldwide to insist that Catholic politicians publicly retract their pro-abortion positions before being allowed to receive the Eucharist. Smeaton told The Wanderer in a February 18 e-mail: “I have spoken about the scandal of committed pro-abortion politicians receiving the Holy Eucharist at three major gatherings over the past five months: in Ireland, at the Faith of our Fathers Conference in Kilkenny; at the International Theological Institute in…Continue Reading

An Interview With Dan Gonzalez… Mass App Creator Describes His Faith Journey

February 23, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on An Interview With Dan Gonzalez… Mass App Creator Describes His Faith Journey

By REY FLORES Dan Gonzalez is a man on a mission — a 25-year mission that has led him to create a terrific new software application, more commonly known as an “app.” The app that Gonzalez has created is the recently launched The Mass Explained app, which is taking evangelization and Catholic education into the 21st century. The Wanderer recently had the opportunity to interview Dan about his work. (Also, read our review of The Mass Explained app on p. 1 of this week’s issue.) Q. Why should people be excited about this new app? A. It’s a terrific new tool that can help Catholics of all ages grow even stronger in his or her faith. Its purpose is to…Continue Reading

Catholic Tech Review . . . “The Mass Explained” App Explains It Well

February 22, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Catholic Tech Review . . . “The Mass Explained” App Explains It Well

By REY FLORES The Wanderer newspaper is not only one of the most respected Catholic publications across the world, but we also have the distinction of being one of the oldest Catholic newspapers in America, published since 1867. Much has obviously changed in that time span and now technology seems to be the wave of the future. While our paper still publishes the good old-fashioned print version of the paper, our web site, www.thewandererpress.com is also creating a strong buzz on the Internet. While some of our older readers may feel somewhat apprehensive about certain technology and gadgets that are so much part of the world today, the technology itself is becoming more user-friendly for people of all ages and…Continue Reading

The Lay Faithful Must Step Up

February 21, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on The Lay Faithful Must Step Up

By REY FLORES Last week, I wrote about how socialist community organizations, political entities, and politicians have infiltrated countless parishes across the nation to shove their anti-Catholic agendas down the throats of the Catholic faithful. Again, this wouldn’t have been easily done without inside help. The insiders are often the parish pastors, associate clergy, and some of the bishops themselves who have at times served as accomplices in allowing secular agendas to permeate an entire congregation with half-hearted theology and full-blown socialism. Never mind that the house is ablaze. If and when people complain and bring it to the attention of those bishops that certain undesirable anti-Catholic elements are infiltrating certain parishes or an entire diocese, these bishops either ignore…Continue Reading

Satan Comes To Oklahoma

February 20, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Satan Comes To Oklahoma

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK No, the title of this article is not a reference to a Charlie Daniels song. That was The Devil Comes Down to Georgia, a whimsical song about a Georgia musician and the Devil competing on the fiddle, in the same vein as the Stephen Vincent Benèt’s short story, “The Devil and Daniel Webster,” and nothing to get concerned about. What I am referring to is an actual proposal from a New York-based group of Satanists to build a seven-foot-high statue of Baphomet, the goat-head pagan idol representing the Devil, on the grounds of the state capitol in Oklahoma. Most commentators are taking the proposal to be a publicity stunt by the New York Satanists, one that…Continue Reading

A Potpourri . . . Can Distributism Be Imposed?

February 19, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on A Potpourri . . . Can Distributism Be Imposed?

By GEORGE A. KENDALL Readers may recall an extended discussion in recent Forum columns on the topic of distributism, the economic system advocated by thinkers like Chesterton and Belloc and grounded in Catholic social teaching. The letters to the editor focused specifically on this question: Is it practically possibly to implement the distributist idea? In my contribution I indicated that, obviously, distributism, closely related, as it is, to the principle of subsidiarity, cannot be imposed, from above, by a central government, because that would entail a contradiction. However, there is at least some hope, however faint, in the possibility of its being imposed from below, through the subsidiary units exercising their legitimate authority, grounded in the natural law, as well…Continue Reading

Time To End The Church As Political Pawn

February 18, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Time To End The Church As Political Pawn

By REY FLORES There is nothing more insidious than when a secular political organization infiltrates the walls of a Catholic church. It is as horrible as when a child is harmed by a stranger, but made even worse if the stranger gained access to the child because of the neglect of the child’s parent. By using this analogy, I hope to be able to convey the grave seriousness of this widespread problem that is occurring on a regular basis in countless parishes across the country, the child being the congregation and the parent the parish pastor. I have been contacted by several individuals and some groups of people who have very serious concerns about what is happening in their own…Continue Reading

Dependence Didn’t Work For Native Americans . . . So Why Should It Work For Obama’s Unemployed?

February 17, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Dependence Didn’t Work For Native Americans . . . So Why Should It Work For Obama’s Unemployed?

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — The Obama administration celebrated people dropping out of the workforce as becoming liberated from the pressures of earning money. However, a woman who identified herself online as half-Seminole expressed skepticism that dependence on government would work any better for the unemployed than it had for Indian tribes. “In my old age, I’ve observed this generation of non-Native American descent who lap up the government handouts of food stamps, medical care, EBT cards, Section 8 housing, Obama phones, and look to the government for [sustenance], and demand more government dole,” wrote Veronica Valentino at the Arizona Daily Independent web site. “When did they become reservation Indians? It didn’t work for us; what makes them think that…Continue Reading

Walgreens Fires Pharmacist… For Refusing To Violate His Religious Beliefs

February 15, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Walgreens Fires Pharmacist… For Refusing To Violate His Religious Beliefs

NASHVILLE — The Thomas More Society, a Chicago-based public interest law firm, together with Brentwood, Tenn., attorney Larry Crain, of Crain, Schuette & Associates, on February 11 filed a federal lawsuit in the Middle District of Tennessee on behalf of pharmacist Dr. Philip Hall against the Walgreen Company (“Walgreens”). The complaint alleges that, in August of 2013, Walgreens wrongfully fired Dr. Hall, who had been employed for six years as a pharmacist at Walgreens’ store in Jamestown, Tenn., in violation of his constitutionally and statutorily protected rights to freedom of religion. Dr. Hall, a Baptist, holds profound religious and moral objections to dispensing abortifacients, or abortion-inducing drugs, such as “Plan B.” For six years, Walgreens respected Dr. Hall’s religious beliefs…Continue Reading
