By DEXTER DUGGAN Long before powerful officials in the nation’s capital worried about COVID-19, a political disease known as Potomac Fever imperiled liberty and independence. It was a virus caught by living along the banks of the river that goes through Washington, D.C., making its victims want to get in the swim of backscratching, power plays, falsehoods, sycophancy and other ills. The tide grew worse and overflowed its banks so the mere Potomac was replaced by an ever-growing swamp whose quicksands and seductions threatened the survival of the country. The moral and religious populace that the Founders had judged necessary for the proper conduct of a healthy nation was under increasing threat by weird creatures rising up through the slimy waters to…Continue Reading

Kamala Harris Skips Border Crisis But Picks Up A Rosary

By CHRISTOPHER MANION Kamala Harris finally went to the border on last Friday, June 25, briefly visiting a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility, touring a migrant center, and meeting with five young girls from Central America. The main event, however, was a meeting with El Paso Bishop Mark Seitz.Wanderer readers will recall Seitz’s strident support of open borders. He became a national leader in the movement after he attacked nine state attorneys general and a Catholic governor for supporting U.S. immigration law. In an op-ed for USA Today in the early days of the Trump administration, Seitz called them “hypocrites and pharisees.”Last year, Seitz got a pat on the back after he knelt before a Black Lives Matter placard.…Continue Reading

The Dereliction Of Christ

By JOE SIXPACK “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, ‘Eli, Eli, lama, sabach-thani?’ that is, ‘My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?’” (Matt. 27:46).These were the words of Christ just before He uttered His last words from the cross — “It is finished” (John 19:30). Having read them recently caused me to recall two different arguments I’ve heard from non-Catholics about Jesus on the cross. The first argument comes from those who believe Jesus wasn’t at all God but a mere man. The other comes from many of our separated brethren, mostly Protestant Fundamentalists. In the first argument from those who claim Jesus isn’t God, they like to say that this was a cry…Continue Reading

Does A Preborn Baby Have Standing To Sue?

July 2, 2021 Frontpage Comments Off on Does A Preborn Baby Have Standing To Sue?

By DEACON MIKE MANNO A brief submitted to the Rhode Island Supreme Court in June argues that a pre-viable fetus, along with a post-viable fetus, has standing to challenge the Rhode Island Reproductive Privacy Act (RPA), which, according to the brief, “unlawfully amended the Rhode Island Constitution by granting, securing, and funding a right to an abortion.”Of course the fetuses are not alone in their challenge: Also on board with the argument are three Rhode Island voters, Catholics for Life, and its umbrella entity, Servants of Christ for Life. Representing the plaintiffs is a Chicago-based religious liberty law firm, the Thomas More Society. The case, as unusual as some of the plaintiffs are, started — as most do — when Rhode…Continue Reading

A Timid And Temporary Defense Of The Free Exercise Of Religion

By TERENCE P. JEFFREY “This decision might as well be written on the dissolving paper sold in magic shops.”So wrote Justice Samuel Alito in the concurring opinion he filed June 17 in a case that pitted the City of Philadelphia against Catholic Social Services (CSS).The court voted 9-0 in favor of CSS. But the arguments presented were far from unanimous.Chief Justice John Roberts wrote a weak opinion based on a technicality — and was joined by Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. Justice Alito wrote a forceful counterargument based on the Constitution itself — and was joined by Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch. (Barrett, joined by Kavanaugh and partly by Breyer, and…Continue Reading

By DEXTER DUGGAN A parishioner at the Delaware church that Joe Biden attends told The Wanderer that no one forces the president to be Catholic, and if he doesn’t believe what the Church requires, then he shouldn’t claim to be one.David O’Flynn, who was one of the signatories of a half-page advertisement in Delaware’s largest newspaper calling on Biden to change his pro-abortion ways, told The Wanderer in a June 21 telephone interview, “I am happy to see him go to Mass. Maybe some of it will sink in.”O’Flynn, who said he moved back to Delaware last October, said he hasn’t often seen Biden at Mass at St. Joseph on the Brandywine church, and when he has seen the president…Continue Reading

By PEGGY MOEN Joseph Dutton may soon become the third Catholic missionary to the Molokai leper settlement — on the Kalaupapa peninsula — to be canonized, joining Fr. Damien (canonized in 2009) and Mother Marianne Cope (canonized in 2012).And he is one of several military veterans advancing toward possible sainthood. This news about Dutton comes at the same time that the USCCB voted by 99 percent to advance the cause of Fr. Joseph Verbis Lafleur, a World War II military chaplain. Lafleur deployed to the Philippines, and spent two and a half years as a prisoner of war of the Japanese. “Fr. Lafleur did a lot of work in the prison camps as well,” said nephew Richard Lafleur. “He gave his…Continue Reading

During her high school years in Texas she was named the Female Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year for the state of Texas. Naturally she was recruited by numerous universities that played intercollegiate volleyball. She accepted a full scholarship to Oregon State University where she was named the Pac 12 Freshman Volleyball Player of the Year while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average (straight A). By JOSEPH MATT Almost ten years ago, The Wanderer approached Don Fier about writing a column that would undertake the task of explaining in detail and elaborating on each facet of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Our hope was to expound on and highlight this beautiful treasure of our Faith — the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This week Don completed the monumental task of penning an in-depth explanation of the contents of the complete Catechism of the Catholic Church by submitting his final column for the series. Thanks to the work of Mr. Fier, perhaps we have helped to fill a small portion of the void experienced by millions of uncatechized Catholics. It is our hope that we…Continue Reading

By DEXTER DUGGAN Did Donald Trump undercut his own political future by showing during his presidency that his brand of aggressive Republicanism could get the job done promoting conservative policies? In other words, if Trump-like determination could produce a winning product, maybe it didn’t have to be only Trump who could sell it. And maybe an alternate candidate wouldn’t burn up so much oxygen focusing on his own tweets.Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis quickly became a conservative star whose successful Sunshine State policies left recall-bait California left-wing Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom looking like bygone bad news. Why, only yesterday Newsom and fellow Golden State Democrat Kamala Harris were all the buzz instead of being the nasty bee stings on the body…Continue Reading
