“Are The Mainline Media Really Biased On Abortion?”

June 11, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on “Are The Mainline Media Really Biased On Abortion?”

By BRIAN CLOWES (Editor’s Note: Brian Clowes has been director of research and training at Human Life International since 1995. For a document containing hundreds of examples of bias by the mainstream media, e-mail him at bclowes@hli.org. This is the second part of his commentary on media bias.) +    +    + The previous column described just a few of the particularly egregious incidents of media bias against the pro-life movement. This problem is certainly not new; as ABC News Political Director Mark Halperin has admitted, “It’s an endemic problem. And again, it’s the reason why for 40 years, conservatives have rightly felt that we did not give them a fair shake.” Why have the media deliberately suppressed, misrepresented, and outright…Continue Reading

As Bishops Decry “Legalism”. . . Obama Dumps Illegal Immigrants At Arizona Bus Stations

June 10, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on As Bishops Decry “Legalism”. . . Obama Dumps Illegal Immigrants At Arizona Bus Stations

By DEXTER DUGGAN PHOENIX — The same day that a few Catholic bishops officially pushed anew in Washington, D.C., for national “immigration reform,” the news broke that the federal government quietly was flying illegal immigrants into Arizona then dropping them at bus stations, so they could continue their journey into the United States. A news story on Phoenix’s KKNT radio (960 AM) attributed the increasing illegal entry to a poor economy in Central America “and the promise of amnesty.” Tucson’s liberal Arizona Daily Star newspaper reported: “Art del Cueto, president of the local Border Patrol union, said when agents ask people they just apprehend why they are coming, they often mention they heard about amnesty.” The lure of “amnesty,” which…Continue Reading

Activist At Tea Party Convention . . . Holds Up GOP Historic Hero Frederick Douglass As A Model

June 9, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Activist At Tea Party Convention . . . Holds Up GOP Historic Hero Frederick Douglass As A Model

By DEXTER DUGGAN SUN CITY WEST, Ariz. — The example of 19th-century emancipation leader Frederick Douglass, himself a former slave, can change the political culture in the United States, an activist conservative Republican told the first annual Arizona Tea Party state convention here. Most people at heart are conservatives, keynote speaker KCarl Smith told the convention of close to 300 Tea Party members from around Arizona on May 31, but the life and example of Douglass, a Republican, can make the necessary emotional connection to win them over to a political allegiance.

Suffer The Children

By REY FLORES This June 4 marked the United Nations International Day of Innocent Children, Victims of Aggression. This is what the UN website tells us: On August 19, 1982, at its emergency special session on the question of Palestine, the General Assembly, “appalled at the great number of innocent Palestinian and Lebanese children [who were] victims of Israel’s acts of aggression,” decided to commemorate June 4 of each year as the International Day of Innocent Children, Victims of Aggression (resolution ES-7/8). The purpose of the day is to acknowledge the pain suffered by children throughout the world who are the victims of physical, mental, and emotional abuse. This day affirms the UN’s commitment to protect the rights of children.

(Editor’s Note: The staff of Inside the Vatican magazine wrote the following news story. Dr. Robert Moynihan is the editor of the magazine. The article is reprinted here with permission; all rights reserved.) +    +    + In the February 20-21 consistory, which focused on Walter Cardinal Kasper’s proposal to seek a pastoral solution to allow divorced and remarried Catholics to receive Communion, a majority of the cardinals opposed the “Kasper Thesis,” Italian Vaticanista Marco Tosatti has reported. Pope Francis on February 20 opened a major two-day meeting on the Church’s approach to the complexities of modern family life. He told the assembled cardinals that the Church needs a “pastoral” approach toward divorced and remarried Catholics that is “intelligent, courageous, and…Continue Reading

Defending Harvard’s Black Mass

June 6, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Defending Harvard’s Black Mass

By JAMES K. FITZPATRICK Am I going to defend the idea of reenacting the black mass at Harvard? Not a chance. But I found someone who did. There are such things. The advocate for what he called “a historical reenactment of a black mass through the Harvard Extension School Cultural Studies Club” was Joseph Laycock, an assistant professor of religious studies as Texas State University, writing on the web site Religion Dispatches on May 15. This story may seem moot, considering that the black mass first got rescheduled off campus, and then probably did not take place at all. The Catholic News Agency reports, “A satanic ‘black mass’ did not take place as planned May 12 on Harvard’s campus. The…Continue Reading

No Place To Hide

By ANDREW P. NAPOLITANO With heart-pounding suspense, John le Carré-like intrigue and Jeffersonian fidelity to the principles of human freedom, Glenn Greenwald has just published No Place to Hide. The book, which reads like a thriller, is Greenwald’s story of his nonstop two weeks of work in May and June of 2013 in Hong Kong with former CIA agent and NSA contractor-turned-whistleblower Edward Snowden. Greenwald was the point person who coordinated the public release of the 1.7 million pages of NSA documents that Snowden took with him in order to prove definitively that the federal government is spying on all of us all the time.

Bishop Cozzens . . . Elucidates Pope Francis’ Teaching On The New Evangelization

June 4, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on Bishop Cozzens . . . Elucidates Pope Francis’ Teaching On The New Evangelization

By PEGGY MOEN MINNEAPOLIS — “What made Pope Francis choose me?. . . I honestly don’t know,” said Bishop Andrew Cozzens when The Wanderer asked him what the Pope looks for in choosing priests for the episcopacy. Cozzens was ordained an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis last December 9, at age 45. He was at the Church of St. Helena here for the 18th Annual Benefit Banquet for The Catholic Servant, a monthly Catholic publication, on May 21. He thought the Holy Father might have chosen him because of his work with the Missionaries of Charity, showing “a love for the poor,” or because he “had some background in the charismatic renewal and works of evangelization.”

Join “The Pill Kills” National Day Of Action On June 7

By REY FLORES WASHINGTON, D.C. — “It is with profound sadness that we must, once again, present the true facts about the dangers of contraception,” said Judie Brown, president of American Life League. “It is a travesty that the national media allow Planned Parenthood and others to deceive women and cause their deaths.” (See also p. 8B.) Brown’s comments came as American Life League revealed that its 2014 “The Pill Kills” event will be the largest it has ever run. This year’s event, featuring educational protests and prayer vigils, is scheduled to take place around the country on Saturday, June 7. The Pill Kills National Day of Action is being cosponsored by nearly 60 organizations in 24 states. The protests…Continue Reading

As In The United States . . . Voters See Reasons To Rise Against Elite Establishments In Britain

June 2, 2014 Frontpage Comments Off on As In The United States . . . Voters See Reasons To Rise Against Elite Establishments In Britain

By DEXTER DUGGAN The British political elite’s lukewarm or hostile positions toward traditional-values issues could have been a major reason that some voters instead chose the insurgent United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) in recent elections, a British pro-life leader told The Wanderer. “It is certainly likely that UKIP has benefited from voters disillusioned with the stance of other parties on pro-life and family issues,” said Paul Tully, general secretary of Britain’s Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC). “In the case of Conservative Party voters defecting to UKIP, [Conservative Prime Minister] David Cameron’s championing of so-called gay marriage is likely to have been a major factor. “This may also have been an issue for Labor [Party] voters defecting to…Continue Reading
