By FR. RICHARD D. BRETON JR. (Editor’s Note: Fr. Richard D. Breton Jr. is a priest of the Diocese of Norwich, Conn. He received his BA in religious studies and his MA in dogmatic theology from Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, Conn.) + + Welcome back to our survey of the Catechism and the Ten Commandments. Today we will examine and break down the meaning behind the Ninth Commandment which is: “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife.”This commandment is uniquely linked to the Sixth Commandment. Unlike the Sixth Commandment that deals with carnal actions of sexual nature, the Ninth Commandment explores the thoughts and words of covetousness. The First Letter of John explains three kinds of covetousness: “For…Continue Reading

The State Of Abortion Law In The States

By CHRISTOPHER MANION The elections this November will mark a critical turning-point for pro-lifers.Motivated as never before, defenders of the unborn will be active nationwide. For the first time in 50 years, victorious candidates will be responsible for exercising the rights of the States and of the People — rights guaranteed by the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution from infringement by any branch of the Federal Government. In the case of abortion, those rights and responsibilities have been arbitrarily denied by the court’s lethal 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade, a decision which Justice Samuel Alito’s draft decision has now found to be unconstitutional. The Dobbs decision offers us a historic opportunity. It represents a wake-up call that millions have been working and…Continue Reading

The Seven Life-Giving Virtues

May 29, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on The Seven Life-Giving Virtues

By DONALD DeMARCO The three theological virtues (faith, hope, and charity) plus the four cardinal virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance) prove to be an effective array of weapons in combatting the Seven Deadly Sins. But there is need for another brace of seven virtues that stand toe-to-toe with each of the deadly sins on an even level. Faith, hope, and charity are theological virtues, while the cardinal virtues belong to an earthly plane.I propose “Seven Life-Giving Virtues,” each one being both the antithesis and the antidote against each of their corresponding death-dealing vices. In this way, we can better understand the specific remedies for each of the deadly sins. The opposite of pride is humility. Nikolai Berdyaev states that humility…Continue Reading

Archbishop Cordileone . . . A Courageous Bishop Stands Tall

By JOSEPH MATT This past week a prominent member of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church has given the world an example of true Catholic leadership in action. Duplicity and silence on the grave issue of defending the Real Presence against sacrilege can no longer be the norm, as this brave archbishop has shown us, as he has put words into action in the defense of the Eucharist. One of the most public sacrileges against Christ Himself in modern times since the advent of Roe v. Wade has been Catholic politicians claiming to be devout Catholics — who regularly receive Holy Communion — all the while promoting and advocating for laws that allow the murder of babies in the womb. This,…Continue Reading

The Illustrated Immaculate Conception

BY JOE SIXPACK Jesus was walking along one day, when He came upon a group of people surrounding a lady of ill repute. It was obvious that the crowd was preparing to stone her, so Jesus made His now-famous statement, “Let the person who has no sin cast the first stone.”The crowd was shamed and one by one began to turn away. All of a sudden, a lovely little woman made her way through the crowd. Finally getting to the front, she tossed a pebble towards the woman.Jesus looks over and says, “I really hate it when you do that, Mom.”Yeah, more humor this week, but it serves to sort of put a modern spin on a 2,000-year-old truth. The…Continue Reading

Decent People Need To Denounce The Crazy

By NEIL PATEL What’s worse, attacking people’s homes and neighborhoods or disrupting religious services? The answer, of course, is that both are completely unacceptable. These are not things normal people need to debate. A man’s home is his castle. Does that ring a bell? It’s an English legal concept adopted by the American founders and reflected in the U.S. Constitution’s Fourth Amendment. Families shelter in homes to protect each other from the outside world. It’s a sanctuary.Accosting people in churches is even worse; they’re literally sacred places. Anyone who violates these fundamental concepts will pay a steep price politically. More importantly, anyone taking these radical steps is furthering America’s sad decline. In the wake of the leaked draft of the Supreme…Continue Reading

Fame And Family Collide In A Rock Star’s Life

By CHRISTOPHER MANION In early 1979, John Howard, longtime president of Rockford College and founder of the Rockford Institute, was invited to speak to a business group in Phoenix, Ariz. Dr. Howard was a real freedom-fighter, and his campus was a haven for solid students and scholars. As a college president since the 1950s, he had pioneered the policy of refusing all federal aid to education. That theme was very popular with business leaders. In those days many of them still had the temerity and independence to object to the federal government’s intrusion into business and just about everything else. With support of that community, Howard raised millions for that small college in Middle America. But on that balmy day in Phoenix,…Continue Reading

A Beacon Of Light… The Eighth Commandment And Personal Integrity

By FR. RICHARD D. BRETON JR. (Editor’s Note: Fr. Richard D. Breton Jr. is a priest of the Diocese of Norwich, Conn. He received his BA in religious studies and his MA in dogmatic theology from Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, Conn.) + + Welcome back to our survey of the Catechism and the Eighth Commandment. This Commandment deals specifically with personal integrity. The Eighth Commandment is: “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor” (Exodus 20:15, Deut. 5:20). The Eighth Commandment condemns lying and the misrepresentation of the truth in our relationship with others (Catechism of the Catholic Church, n. 2464).Because God is regarded as the author of all truth, the Church believes that humans are…Continue Reading

Dumbing Down Equitably

By DEACON MIKE MANNO One of the matters that has occupied this column over the years is that of the state of our public schools, and education in general. Lately, we have seen a nearly unprecedented public interest in what is happening in our schools and to our children. That wasn’t so a few years back when I began this column.Fortunately, however, public attention has been focused more and more on education recently. This is due to a number of factors, most notably those things that the public never saw or appreciated until now. Part of this is due to the pandemic, which forced the closure of many schools. Now, combine that with parents watching their kids’ lessons on home computers…Continue Reading

More Ammo For Washington

By BARBARA SIMPSON It’s happened again, the second time in two days — a mass shooting. One at a supermarket in New York State and then another, at a church in Southern California. The first, clearly, was done by an 18-year-old male who had a racial vendetta in mind. Most victims were black. He fatally shot 10. He’s in custody and so is his weapon.A question about his history has been raised, as police confirm that last year, he made shooting threats against his high school and was taken into custody. He was hospitalized for a short time but then was released and apparently has not been under surveillance. Why that has been the case is a matter for investigation. The second…Continue Reading
