By CHRISTOPHER MANION We reported last week the theft of a tabernacle from the altar of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Katy, Texas. Earlier this week, Katy Police Department Detective George Stewart informed The Wanderer that police had arrested Christian James Meritt, a Katy resident, on May 11, as a suspect in the theft. The stolen tabernacle was discovered in the parking lot of a Burger King Restaurant in Katy, with signs of forced entry but no sign of the missing contents, which included a number of consecrated Hosts.Police are following several leads, says Detective Stewart. By JOE SIXPACK A Jesuit, a Dominican, and a Franciscan were walking along an old road, debating the greatness of their orders. Suddenly, an apparition of the Holy Family appeared in front of them, with Jesus in a manger and Mary and Joseph praying over Him. The Franciscan fell on his face, overcome with awe at the sight of God born in such poverty. The Dominican fell to his knees, adoring the beautiful reflection of the Trinity and the Holy Family. The Jesuit walked up to Joseph, put his arm around his shoulder, and said, “So, have you thought about where to send him to school?”You have to admit this is funny…and the Jesuit offers a stereotypical Jesuit reaction to…Continue Reading

Young Catholics Are Enthusiastically Pro-Life

May 19, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on Young Catholics Are Enthusiastically Pro-Life

By PAUL KRAUSE One of the blessings of being involved in Catholic educational work is getting to know young Catholic students. While trendy Catholic “rebels” tend to take the media clout, young Catholics who are devout in their faith, I have found, are enthusiastically pro-life. This should fill us with great hope.Abortion used to be “the Catholic issue.” While evangelicals and various Baptist groups initially supported Roe v. Wade, Catholics have always held the line concerning the dignity of life and the grave sin of abortion. Sophists like to claim “nuance” by citing patristic writings on the distinction between abortion pre and post “quickening” of the soul. These tactics fail to mention that in either case abortion was always a…Continue Reading

Mount Tabor And The Mass

By JAMES MONTI The pages of Sacred Scripture and so rich and fertile that even after a lifetime of hearing and reading the Word of God there always remains something new for our souls to discover. One of the very richest episodes in the Gospels is that of the Transfiguration. It begins in mystery: “And after six days Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart” (Matt. 17:1).We need to try to picture this. Our Lord, without explaining why, directs the three apostles to come with Him up what must have been a somewhat steep and rugged path through a stretch of wilderness to reach the remote summit of…Continue Reading

A Beacon Of Light… The Seventh Commandment Today

May 17, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on A Beacon Of Light… The Seventh Commandment Today

By FR. RICHARD D. BRETON JR. (Editor’s Note: Fr. Richard D. Breton Jr. is a priest of the Diocese of Norwich, Conn. He received his BA in religious studies and his MA in dogmatic theology from Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, Conn.) + + Have you looked around to see what is happening in the world lately? Do you see the great injustices and uncharitable acts being perpetrated? Someone might ask why these questions are important. The destruction happening around us is due to the injustice and uncharity we experience daily, and are precisely why the Seventh Commandment is so important. The “seventh word” of the Decalogue is: “You Shall Not Steal.” This Commandment is God’s revelation to us…Continue Reading

It’s Federalism, Stupid

By DEACON MIKE MANNO Years ago, in what seems like another life, I taught college law and political science. Each semester, when I started a new U.S. government class, on the first day, I gave the students a short, ungraded test to see how much they already knew about the government and how it worked. In general the results bothered me, for while all the students had completed high school and should have had a working understanding of how the government worked, very few were able to answer the simplest of questions correctly. I did not think it unusual that some might not know the name of the person representing them in Congress. I was, however, appalled by so many that…Continue Reading

“Shooting Saves Money!”

By BARBARA SIMPSON Every once in a while, I see a news headline that really catches my attention — not because of the overall subject matter but because of what an “expert” says about it.This happened recently in a news report from Florida in which a homeowner shot at a suspected burglar who was accused of breaking into several homes. He didn’t hit him; he just shot at him.The sheriff praised the homeowner, and urged residents to use lethal force against intruders because it would save the taxpayers money! In fact, he added, that an intruder’s chances of reoffending are zero if he gets shot by a homeowner! That caught my eye — mainly for the basic honesty and common sense…Continue Reading

Prospective Dobbs Decision Causes Eruption Of Abortion Rage

May 14, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on Prospective Dobbs Decision Causes Eruption Of Abortion Rage

By CHRISTOPHER MANION Last week’s release of Justice Alito’s draft opinion in the case of Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization continues to roil the pro-abortion Left nationwide. If left intact in the Court’s published opinion later this term, the opinion will send Roe v. Wade’s to the constitutional dustbin, where it belongs. While we might prefer to let Roe peacefully decompose next to Dred Scott v. Sandford and Plessy v. Ferguson, abortion advocates will undoubtedly seek to resuscitate the fetid cadaver in every possible way.Justice Alito’s no-nonsense analysis patiently and thoroughly eviscerates Roe’s reasoning, but abortion advocates were never interested in the Roe Court’s flimsy argument in the first place — only the result: abortion on demand. Their reaction to…Continue Reading

Answering An Old Question

May 13, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on Answering An Old Question

BY JOE SIXPACK Sometimes people already know the answers to the questions they ask me, but they ask anyway with the hope that maybe the answer will be more to their liking. I genuinely believe that is the case with a question that was recently asked by a cradle Catholic.Still, I’m going to reproduce my answer here (with only slight editing), because we’re so often only told we can’t do a thing, but not why we can’t do it. Well, I’m going to try to explain the “why” in this one. Here it is. . . .You asked, “Is it wrong to satisfy yourself [masturbation] and is this a mortal sin?” In a word, yes. Let me try to explain it…Continue Reading

St. Peter: A Misunderstood Apostle

May 12, 2022 Frontpage Comments Off on St. Peter: A Misunderstood Apostle

By JOHN YOUNG St. Peter is seen as an impetuous man who acted without thinking. He at first refused to let Jesus wash his feet, then went to the other extreme and wanted to be washed all over. He declared he would follow Jesus even to death, and then betrayed Him three times. In the early Church there was intense debate about whether Gentile converts were obliged to follow Jewish laws, and it is sometimes asserted that St. Peter went wrong here and had to be corrected by St. Paul, who said, “I resisted him to the face.”It is this matter of Gentile converts and Peter’s attitude that I want to look at here because his position is often completely misrepresented.…Continue Reading
